Extrusion is a process used to make objects with a fixed cross-sectional shape. The material can either be plastic, ceramic or metal. The material is drawn through a die of the desired profile shape or outline, which then forms a continuous length of that shape. At Airtech Vacuum Incorporated, we provide our clients with all extruder vacuum equipment for their production line. We offer pumps that are capable of handling water carryover that is related with the sizing and calibration tables, or be used for all functions in extruder barrel venting process.

About the Extrusion Industry

The process of plastic extrusion starts by feeding pellets, beads or plastic chips from a hopper into the barrel of an extruder. Resin, is mixed with other substances such as colorants and UV inhibitors during the process. The resin is pushed into the barrel by a screw extruder. The screw extruder functions in such a manner that it reduces the melt pressure back to atmospheric. This helps to avoid the resin material from being pumped out of the vent opening.

Airtech, pumps are the perfect fit for extruder machines. They work efficiently to vent the gases that may be trapped inside which consequently may interfere with the quality of the end product. Once the melting process of the plastic is done, it leaves the barrel and then travels through a screen pack to remove any unwanted contaminants. The screen is usually reinforced with a breaker plate which has many holes in it and made from very thick pucks of metal. The plates can withstand high pressure conditions which exceed 5000 psi during this stage of the process. Also acting as a source for back pressure in the barrel, the plate is needed to ensure proper mixing of the resin. It also adds strength to the material during processing.

From the breaker plate, the plastic enters the die while still in molten state, which gives it the final profile. The extrudate is then cooled and solidified by passing it through a water tank. For production lines working with tube or pipe extrusion, a vacuum is used to carefully control the water bath to prevent the pipe carrying the molten plastic from collapsing.
